Colour PPF or classic vinyl wrap: what to choose when you want a new colour

You want a different colour for your car without repainting it. Until recently, the only option was a classic vinyl wrap. Today there is an alternative that does more than change the colour: colour PPF.

At CDD Detailing we no longer use classic vinyl. We use colour PPF only. Here is why.

What classic vinyl is

Classic vinyl is a thin film designed mainly for looks. It is installed with heat (a heat gun) so it can stretch over the body panels.

The problems show up over time:

  • it loses its shape and can shrink back at the edges;
  • it degrades faster under sun and weather;
  • the high installation temperatures and later removal can damage the paint;
  • it never quite looks like real paint.

Classic vinyl is a compromise: it changes the colour, but it does not protect the car.

What colour PPF is

PPF (Paint Protection Film) is the same film technology used for clear protection against stone chips. Colour PPF adds the colour you want on top of that protection.

The differences that matter

  • Original-paint look, with no "orange peel".
  • Does not harm the paint: no aggressive heat during installation.
  • Real protection against scratches, stone chips and daily wear.
  • Self-healing: micro-scratches disappear.
  • Far more durable over time than classic vinyl.
  • Finish: gloss, matte or satin.

In short

Classic vinyl only changes the colour. Colour PPF changes the colour and protects your car, keeping it like new.

It can be combined with chrome delete for a fully modern look: chrome trim becomes black, in gloss, matte or satin.

How much does it cost?
